Normal and Smart mode

What the bbuddy mode toggle changes, when to use Normal, when to use Smart, and how it affects BBT.

5 min readUpdated 2026-05-15

bbuddy has two AI modes: Normal and Smart. The mode changes how deeply bbuddy works on new AI tasks. It does not rewrite existing drafts, scheduled posts, Library items, or Feed items.

Where to change it

Open Settings → Preferences, then find bbuddy mode. Choose Normal for faster, lower-cost work, or Smart for deeper reasoning and richer output.

Normal mode

Normal is the default. Use it for everyday drafting, quick chat requests, simple revisions, routine recurring suggestions, and posts where the direction is already clear.

  • Faster replies and drafts.
  • Lower BBT use per AI task.
  • Best for simple prompts and established workflows.

Smart mode

Smart spends more effort on the request. Use it when the task needs stronger planning, better source synthesis, more careful language, or more nuanced brand judgment.

  • Better for complex strategy or campaign planning.
  • Better for long threads, multi-platform variants, and deep rewrites.
  • Useful when drafting from messy Feed items or many Library references.
  • Useful for locale-sensitive writing where native phrasing matters.
  • Uses noticeably more BBT per AI task.

What it affects

The selected mode is used for new assistant turns, new content generation, onboarding tailoring, automation building, and automation runs that ask bbuddy to draft or transform content. Existing posts keep the copy they already have.

How it affects BBT

Smart mode costs more BBT because bbuddy uses more reasoning and richer generation. If you are near the end of your BBT balance, use Normal for routine work and reserve Smart for the posts or workflows where quality matters most.
